The Reclamation Suite

This sculpture began in a 2017 series called The Reclamation Suite.  These works reflect a practice exploring issues of gender, social role and identity.  Altered stone, steel and mixed media are combined in works of human scale. Pneumatic and electric diamond bladed tools were used to carve, shape and rip each stone to recall a personal memory or point to an immediate experience. Each stone is then pinned on top of a mild steel, CAD plasma cut base plate with mig welded twisted legs, which were cold pressed on a Dake 25-ton hydraulic press. Varying heights and widths of these constructions create free-standing figures resting on a table or connecting to the floor.

The Intercession Series & Earlier Work

This sculpture series began in 2014 called The Reclamation Suite. The Egg Series was my first body of marble having started carving stone in 2003. A colleague walked into a solo show I had of my ceramics in the same series. She stopped, turned to me and said, “You must carve these forms in stone, and I now where you can learn how to do it!” I enrolled that summer in The Marble/marble Institute in Marble, CO, 1 hour away from my house & studio. Madeline Weiner is the founder and inspiritor of this magical school during each summer for close to 30 years in 2020. This set me on a new course that continues today. What I began then grew into the more complex work of The Intercession Series.
